Friendship's purpose has been to provide a Christian education midweek group for girls ages 6-11 year olds. This Christian education program has been offered at Portland United Church since the fall of 1991.
We meet Monday 6:30-8 P.M. in Room 9. We do not meet on holidays, school days off or storm dates.
Weekly Format
- Candle lighting and Repeating of Motto "A Friend Loves At All Times." Proverbs 17:17
- Offering and Prayer
- Roll Call
- Program: Story/Games/Craft/Projects etc.
- Closing: Friendship Circle-(extinguishing the light, Friendship Hymn & handshake.)
There are also parties at Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and our yearly Closing. There is not a Friendship uniform but the girls do receive a Friendship scarf. (The Senior Girls receive a different color scarf.)
- First three years: Red Scarf
- 4th year: Blue Scarf
- 5th year: Gold Scarf
This is usually presented in October or early November or in the case of a girl coming later in the year, after 4 weeks of attendance.
Involvements
The Friendship Group has been involved in Christmas Outreach Projects such as saving pennies for the Harbour Lights Program in support of local Food Banks. Through the World Wildlife Federation, Friendship has adopted a Polar Bear (Blizzard), a Panda (Patch) and a Turtle. During Advent the group has taken part in the Advent Candlelighting Liturgy.
